Advance HE is an international, member-focused charity, dedicated to the development and enhancement of Higher Education for the benefit of students, staff and society. It is also a global business with an ambitious growth strategy. Advance HE focuses particularly on enhancing teaching and learning, effective governance, and leadership development, as well as tackling inequalities through its equality, diversity and inclusion work, such as the Race Equality Charter and Athena Swan. It offers professional development programmes and events, Fellowships, awards, student surveys, and consultancy and enhancement services. Advance HE is now seeking to appoint an inspirational leader to the position of Chair of its Board. The appointee will play a leading role in the governance of the organisation.

The next Chair will bring senior leadership experience at the highest level, and will have an outstanding track-record of success in their own field. Applicants for the post should be familiar with the demands of board-level governance, and will be credible within a higher education context. The best candidates will bring well developed strategic abilities coupled with strong leadership qualities and political influencing skills. They will also have experience of diversifying income streams and business growth. They must be able to communicate clearly. They must have strong ambassadorial qualities, political nous and well-honed commercial instincts. They must be skilled at chairing meetings. They will act as an excellent sounding-board and source of wise counsel for the Chief Executive and other senior leaders of the organisation.

The Chair will serve for an initial term of three or four years (followed by the opportunity to renew) from the date of their appointment. The time commitment associated with the office varies according to circumstances, but is expected to average out at approximately two to three days a month. This includes the need for availability at unexpected times on occasion.
