Dean of Lincoln Medical School, University of Lincoln

Overview
The University of Lincoln is looking to appoint a Dean to take forward its ambition to develop into an independent, externally-focused, and innovative medical school. Established through a partnership between the universities of Nottingham and Lincoln in 2018, the Lincoln Medical School currently delivers a successful BMBS degree as part of University of Nottingham’s programmes, at a purpose-built medical sciences building based on the University of Lincoln’s Brayford Campus. Since its foundation, the School has rapidly established a strong reputation at undergraduate level, and now seeks to broaden this success into developing a thriving research culture and improve the training and retention of clinicians in Lincolnshire and the wider region. The successful candidate will join a university with a justly-earned reputation for its innovative approach to responding to the needs of the communities it serves, working in collaboration with a network of supportive regional partners and in an environment which encourages and embraces dynamism.
The University’s new 2022-27 strategy emphasises the essential value of collaboration to achieving our mission and recent changes to our academic structures are designed to cultivate greater opportunities for inter-disciplinary collaboration, including in STEMM subjects where advances in research and innovation frequently occur at the intersection of ‘traditional’ academic disciplines. The founding Dean role presents a special opportunity to provide vision, expertise and leadership which will help us drive forward a culture in Lincoln Medical School built around collaboration, working with colleagues and partners from a variety of established and emerging specialisms.
The successful candidate will have the ability to shape the next phase of the Lincoln Medical School, by strategically leading the School: encompassing programme provision, research excellence, and liaison with regulatory bodies and external stakeholders. They will also provide innovative and clear vision in the development of postgraduate education and research , and the formulation and implementation of a strong research strategy. The University of Lincoln has areas of strength that can be built on including the Lincoln International Institute for Rural Health, the Lincoln Clinical Trials Unit, the Community and Health Research Unit, and expertise across biomedical sciences, public health, computer science, sport science, pharmacy, psychology, nursing, midwifery and allied health.
Whilst pursuing the development of the School’s programmes, the founding Dean will possess the drive, ambition and reputation to ensure the successful transition to independence of Lincoln Medical School with full GMC approval.
Strong candidates will be passionate about the School’s unique regional context, determined to develop a distinctive medical school that is both highly competitive and tailored to the needs of the people of Lincolnshire, and be agile and creative in order to adapt to the changing educational needs and professional and regulatory context. The appointee will be medically qualified and we welcome applicants with experience in primary or secondary care, with proven experience of senior leadership in the development and delivery of medical education and medical or health related research. They will also have significant experience of leading strategic change and diverse teams, as well as working with key external bodies and stakeholders such as the GMC, and NHS Trusts.
