Independent University Council Members, Birmingham Newman University

Overview
Birmingham Newman University is a distinctive, diverse University based in South-West Birmingham built on Catholic foundations and with a successful multidisciplinary offer. We are committed to making an impact in the region and beyond, through teaching and learning, research and scholarship. Our ambition is based firmly on the principles of social justice.
In an exciting period of growth and development, Birmingham Newman is looking to appoint three new Independent University Council Members. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in shaping the strategic direction of the University.
As we move toward the development and launch of our new University Strategy, Council Members will play a key role in determining the educational character and mission of the University, and will be responsible for overseeing its activities and the effective and efficient use of resources. Birmingham Newman is committed to growth, and we recently unveiled a brand-new Students Union and a new School of Nursing and Midwifery. We have also just changed the name of the University in one of the first steps toward our new vision.
The appointed Council Member will need to be strategically engaged, disciplined and thoughtful in their contribution, and diligent in developing a nuanced understanding of the institution and of Higher Education more generally. In line with current skills gaps on the Council, they will ideally have expertise in one of the following: Finance, IT, Law, or Human Resources. Candidates should demonstrate experience of working at board level, preferably in a large complex organisation and/or with a high degree of regulation. Appointees to the Board will need to be sympathetic to the University’s mission and values.
Birmingham Newman is very proud of its diverse community and wants to see the diversity of its student population reflected in the Council. Given our richly diverse student community, we are particularly interested in hearing from applicants from groups currently under-represented on the Council.
