Overview

Founded in 1985, Ware Museum is an independent, accredited museum telling the story of life in Ware from the Mesolithic period to the present day.  The museum is housed in Priory Lodge, a Grade II listed building at the entrance to Ware Priory, dating back to the 14th century, and welcomes approximately 8,000 visitors each year.

The museum receives a core grant from Ware Town Council, alongside income from corporate sponsorship, fees, and public donations. Its collections span archaeology, geology, local industry and social history, with particularly significant holdings relating to Ware’s malting industry, Allen & Hanburys (later GSK), the town’s pharmaceutical heritage, and the Wickham engineering firm.

This is an exciting time to become involved with Ware Museum, which has ambitious plans to develop and redisplay the museum’s collections in a way which responds to the needs and interests of a wider range of audiences.

The museum is governed by a Trustee committee of up to twelve members, including representatives from Ware Town Council and the Ware Society. Board meetings are held bi-monthly, supported by four sub-committees: Finance, Audience Development, Collections, and Volunteer Management.

We are now seeking a Trustee with expertise in fundraising and/or commercial or business development.  Applicants should have a passion for museums and cultural heritage and a commitment to supporting the museum’s long-term sustainability.

This is an exciting time to join Ware Museum, which has ambitious plans to develop and redisplay its collections to engage a wider and more diverse range of audiences.
