Clerk, The Haberdashers' Company
The Worshipful Company of Haberdashers is one of the Great Twelve Livery Companies of the City of London. Over 600 years old, today it fulfils its charitable purpose primarily through its involvement with schools. In all, the Haberdashers’ family of 20 schools educates about 12,000 pupils, aged 3 to 18, and the schools employ around 1,400 staff across England and Wales; the group comprises academies, grammar and independent schools and serves a very diverse range of both urban and rural communities. The Company’s other significant charitable activity is grant-making, and in the year ending June 2019, approximately £1m was distributed to a range of causes. The Company is a membership organisation and many of its 1,000 members will at some stage play a very active part in the management of its affairs and its engagement with charitable work.
The Company’s Schools, Foundations and Charities form an enterprise with a turnover of nearly £100m and assets of over £500m. The Clerk, who is in essence the Chief Executive, supports the Master, Wardens and the Court of Assistants in the management of these resources, and by doing so assists in steering the evolution of the Company in ways that ensure that it remains a relevant and effective institution for centuries to come.
After nearly eight years of dedicated service to the Company, the current Clerk has indicated his wish to retire in Autumn 2020. The Company seeks to attract candidates for the role who share the Haberdashers’ deep-seated commitment to, and interest in, the education of children and young people. This is also a rare chance to join one of the leading charities in the City of London, and to play a crucial role in supporting the strong and vibrant community of Haberdashers in their work.
