It was a real pleasure to be involved in the Heritage Alliance’s Heritage Day, where we were led a workshop on “rethinking governance”.   Thank you to all those who attended and participated.

Our view is that, in times of increasingly constrained resources, boards need to focus much more on their positive impact primarily over and above (but not opposed to) the traditional activities of compliance / risk / oversight. Boards should focus their energies in a determined way on supporting the executive in developing and delivering strategy.  Most of our codes of governance need re-writing for the current era.

We explored the nature of trusteeship from an impact, rather than skills perspective, and discussed the potential for compliance codes and risk registers to make boards extremely risk averse, rather than supporting success. At least one participant’s organization has adopted an “opportunity register” to shift the discussion towards embracing innovation.

We look forward to continuing the discussions in future….
